How to teach a dog commands: list of commands

Some owners are sure that the dog does not need to be trained in teams if it does not take part in competitions and exhibitions. But this is fundamentally the wrong position. A well-bred and obedient pet is not only a reason to be proud, but also an opportunity not to experience problems with behavior during a walk or in other situations. This is true not only for representatives of large or fighting breeds, but also for decorative dogs, which can also cause a lot of trouble to the owner, surrounding people and animals.

What teams can be taught

This is rather a rhetorical question, because dogs are well trained and with proper attention and patience can learn any skills. Someone wants the pet to bring items, while someone wants to protect the housing. The main thing that is worth highlighting: he must respond to his nickname, hear and obey the owner when he is instructed or sees a warning gesture. There can be no single list for non-commercial breeds, so it all depends on the owner and personal preferences. Nevertheless, there is a list of basic commands that develop the animal's dexterity, obedience, and quick wits.

"To me"

One of the basic commands, which must be practiced to perfect execution, as in some cases it can save a pet's life. At first it is pronounced when the dog is already running to the owner, and subsequently - using attractive objects (goodies, toys). The order is given in a calm voice from a short distance, and when the student has mastered it a little, it is necessary to increase the distance and, ideally, achieve execution even when the owner is out of sight (for example, in another room).

You should not use the order “To me” before doing things that are unpleasant for the animal (to cut nails, scold for anything, etc.).

"Sit"

Another mandatory command that allows you to stop the dog at the right time and take a sitting position. To begin with, it is pronounced at the moments when the puppy starts to sit down himself, and subsequently - at the request of the owner after pronouncing the order. To master it, you need to show and let the animal smell the delicacy, then raise it above your head and voice the order. You can simultaneously help the animal by gently pressing on the area of the sacrum.

"To me" and "Sit" are the two most important skills that must be performed the first time, regardless of the situation and mood. Without mastering them, you should not let the dog go without a leash while walking.

"Beside"

This skill is useful so that the beast does not scare others in public and follows the owner. It is recommended to start the lesson when he is walking up and will not be distracted by external factors. Training takes place in motion, on a leash, which is kept 20-30 cm from the collar. The owner moves at a moderate pace and clearly pronounces "Next." If the dog moves away from his feet or gets underfoot, you need to return it to its place with a leash and repeated order and, if successful, encourage it with a treat. Over time, you can speed up or slow down the pace of the movement, go on a run or turn to the side and make sure that the dog is always at the foot and moves in parallel.

"Fu"

One of the basic skills that requires a complete prohibition of incorrect actions, and will be useful when you need to wean a puppy to bite, jump on people, pick up prohibited items or catch up with someone. Initially, the skill is practiced on a sagging leash that jerks sharply at the time the order is issued.

Do not abuse this requirement so as not to turn a dog’s life into a series of prohibitions. Too frequent repetition is fraught with the fact that she simply ceases to respond to it.

"A place"

The animal must be clearly marked with a permanent place, and it must know its location. For training you need to say "Place" and lure the dog there, showing a treat. When he is in the right place, praise and give a tidbit. Usually this requirement is used for undesirable behavior and means something like a human "leave", for example, if the dog begs food from the table or jumps on guests.

"Lie down"

This order is not used as often as “Sit,” but it can also be useful in certain situations, for example, at a veterinarian’s appointment when you need to examine your pet. For training, you can use a treat that holds so that the animal stretches forward and down and eventually takes a lying position. The second option - after giving the order, press the withers with one hand, and start the second with the front paws and push them forward.

It is important to ensure that the dog does not fall over on its side and lies down gently, stretching the front and picking up the hind legs.

"Stand"

This skill is included not only in the list of standards, but is also often used in everyday life. For example, combing out wool or dressing an animal is much more convenient if it is level and does not fall on its side. Since this team requires more endurance and concentration, start training should not be earlier than reaching 7 months of age. After pronouncing the “Stand” instruction, you need to bend over to the dog sitting next to it and raise it to a standing position, taking it with your left hand under the stomach. After a 3-4 second retention, you can give a treat and praise.

"Give"

Hearing such an order, the beast must give an object that holds in his mouth or protects as his property (a bowl, a toy) and does not allow him to come close. It is well mastered in puppyhood on toys, so when the puppy clings to the toy, you need to strictly say: "Give" and pick it up. If necessary, you can stroke, shake the animal or open your jaw with your free hand, repeating the order. For starters, it is important to immediately return the toy, and over time to widen the gap between the execution and return of the item.

Aport

Despite the fact that this skill is not as important as “To Me,” “Nearby,” or “Place,” it can be taught from an early age to complement the abilities of your student. First you need to put the student in place and interest in some object (stick, ball), and when he tries to grab the thing, throw it back and say: “Aport!”. Training is accompanied by a gesture indicating the necessary subject.

"Walk"

It is usually used to change activities after an exercise is completed. The team presents no difficulties for the animal. The order "Walk" is pronounced and the direction of movement is indicated by a gesture. If after practicing other skills every time you let go of the dog with the word “Walk,” then there will be no need for focused training.

Give a paw

The team does not carry any functional load, but will be very useful when it comes time to cut its claws or wash its legs after a walk. In order to master this useful trick, you need to seat the pet in front of you and show the delicacy clamped in a fist. He will instinctively try to reach him first with his tongue, and then with his paw. At this moment you need to say: “Give the paw” and hold the paw for a few seconds in your hands, after which you can praise the student and give an honestly earned edible award.

Fas

This team deserves special attention and is mastered only after other orders are unconditionally and instantly executed. “Fas” is a defensive, but at the same time dangerous skill, so it is best to learn it in the presence of a professional instructor and at the age of not earlier than 6-10 months. After the words "Fas" the trainee must attack the object.

Attention: you can train the Fas team only in a psychologically healthy and balanced dog!

Training

Before starting training, it is important to realize that there are no stupid pets. Of course, it is advisable to start working immediately after the puppy has appeared in the house. Starting from 3 months, you can begin to master simple skills in a playful way, since the baby will quickly absorb information. Some people think that with age the beast gets dumber, but it’s not so - it’s more difficult for an adult animal to absorb new information. But if the moment is missed and the dog has matured, it can also be taught teams at home, if you act correctly and systematically, but it just takes more time.

The main conditions for successful training include confident loud intonation of the voice, clarity of gestures and sufficient patience, since at first the animal can ignore orders or gestures.

Choosing a training place

A place familiar to the dog, where there will be no distractions (cars, strangers, and animals), is suitable as a training place. If the place is unfamiliar, you need to give him time to sniff at the new territory and make sure that there are no dangers.

Training time selection

The time for classes is selected depending on the mode of the day and your own plans, but it is undesirable to conduct classes in the middle of the day in the summer. If this is the only possible time, then you should stock up with enough water. You should not start classes immediately after sleep, a hearty lunch or dinner. The last meal should be a few hours before the workout. Before the start of the lesson, it is recommended to walk the beast well or run several laps around the stadium.

Goodies Selection

It is important to bring your favorite dog treat with you, which will motivate her to obey and follow the orders correctly. It can be pieces of cheese, boiled meat, dry food, special cookies bought at the pet store and any other options.

How to praise

Delicacy and praise (in a voice or in the form of stroking) for a dog acts as an encouragement to correct behavior only if it is received immediately at the time the task is completed. A common mistake is a delay in goodies, during which actions unrelated to the team will probably be performed. For example, when mastering the order "To me", a treat is issued as soon as the dog is near his feet, but not when she has already approached, sat down or twisted around. Otherwise, the promotion will be associated with the last action (she sat down, licked her hand, leaned her paws on the owner, etc.)

Useful Tips

If you decide not to use the services of dog handlers, but to train a dog at home, it is useful to at least know their main professional recommendations:

  1. Classes are held daily with a gradual increase in time and number of repetitions. To start, 10-15 minutes will be enough.
  2. The team is pronounced in a strict, serious voice, praise is softer and more playful.
  3. The requirement is pronounced once, a maximum of two times. Repeated repetition will not be effective, because the dog will be sure that you can follow the instructions from the tenth time, which is unacceptable in critical situations.
  4. Before voicing the order, the pet's name is pronounced, which is a kind of signal to attract attention and follow further instructions.
  5. You can not raise your voice or go on screaming and especially resort to physical punishment if the student refuses to follow the instruction.
  6. Every successful action is encouraged by dainty and verbal praise.
  7. You can conduct classes in one place, and after successfully mastering the skill, you can change the place, the environment and the place.

If you become the owner of a new pet, it is important to understand that a change of scenery usually causes stress to the dog. At first, it is important to make friends with him, devote more time and feed only with your own hands in order to achieve the necessary trust. If you put enough love, attention and care into a dog to teach basic skills, you can get a well-bred pet that will be devoted to its owner to the tip of the tail.
